The Indian Institute of Management, Sirmaur has invited applications for the post of Legal Officer at its campus at Dhaula Kuan, District Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh.
Two dates, not one. Read this first.
The online application must be submitted by 14 August 2026. That is the immediate deadline.
Separately, the system-generated application form, with self-attested copies of documents, must also reach the Institute by post or courier by 31 August 2026. Both steps are mandatory. Candidates who complete the online form and stop there will not have a valid application.
Two features of this advertisement set it apart from the usual run of institutional legal vacancies, and both are worth noting before you read further.
The first is the age limit of 60 years. That is far above the ceiling in most recruitment of this kind, and it opens the post to senior practitioners and to officers who have retired from government or public sector legal departments.
The second is that the Institute has expressly said that practising advocates with a proven track record may be considered for engagement on a retainership basis. So this is not necessarily an either-or between practice and employment. A lawyer in active practice can be considered without giving up the Bar.

Essential Qualification and Experience
The Institute has set out the requirement as follows:
- A professional law graduate with extensive experience in dealing with the legal matters of a Government organisation, Government undertaking or similar body.
- Experience across service matters, labour laws and land laws, and in liaising with PSUs and Central or State Government offices.
- Hands-on experience of drafting and vetting documents.
- A minimum of five years dealing with legal matters in the Government of India, a PSU, companies or similar entities.
- The minimum required qualification is LL.B.
- Excellent command over English; proficiency in Hindi is preferred.
- Practising advocates with a proven track record may also be considered for engagement on a retainership basis.

Who Should Apply
The experience the Institute has asked for tells you what the work will actually be. Service matters, labour laws and land laws, together with liaison work involving government offices, is the profile of an institutional legal officer whose day is spent on establishment disputes, contractor and staff issues, and land and campus matters — not on commercial transactions.
That makes this a natural fit for three groups. First, lawyers who have already spent five or more years inside a government or PSU legal department and want a stable institutional role. Second, retired legal officers of government bodies, for whom the age ceiling of 60 is the operative point. Third, practising advocates in Himachal Pradesh and the surrounding region who would like an institutional retainer alongside their practice, which the notification expressly permits.
One point to weigh honestly. The salary is described as consolidated, and the retainership route is offered as an alternative. Candidates should therefore satisfy themselves from the official notification about the exact nature and tenure of the engagement, and about what a consolidated figure does and does not include, before committing to it — particularly anyone considering leaving a regular position.
