Law Jobs update by Akinchan Aggarwal, Advocate — B.A. (Hons.) Gold Medalist, LL.B. (University Rank 2), LL.M. (Dispute Resolution), UGC-NET, Ph.D. (Pursuing)
The Braithwaite, Burn & Jessop Construction Company Limited (BBJ), a Government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Heavy Industries, has invited applications for one post of Senior Manager / Manager (Law) at Kolkata.
Before you apply: this is almost certainly not a general recruitment.
The official notification is published under the file name “advertisement for retiring / retired executives”. Put that together with the two other numbers in the advertisement — an upper age limit of 62 and a demand for 12 to 15 years of PSU or corporate legal experience — and the shape of the post becomes clear. It is a re-employment engagement aimed at executives retiring from, or already retired from, public sector service.
That matters in both directions. A practitioner in his thirties with twelve years at the Bar may be technically within the experience band but outside the intended pool. A retired PSU law officer — a category that rarely sees advertisements addressed to it at all — is exactly who this is for. Confirm the position from the official PDF before you spend time on the application.
Applications close on 31 August 2026 and are to be sent by email.

Who BBJ Is — and Why It Shapes the Legal Work
Candidates outside Kolkata may not recognise the name, and it is worth knowing before an interview.
BBJ was established on 26 January 1935 and is a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Heavy Industries. It is the company that built the Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu) and the Vidyasagar Setu at Kolkata, the Rajendra Setu at Mokameh — independent India's first bridge over the Ganga — the Yamuna Bridge at Delhi, the Godavari Bridge at Rajahmundry and the Brahmaputra Bridge at Pandu. Its present work is largely steel railway bridges, executed for Indian Railways, IRCON and RVNL, alongside industrial structural work, refinery piping and heavy civil foundations.
That business model tells you what the law department actually does. A construction PSU working almost entirely on large government contracts generates a very particular docket:
- Arbitration, in volume. Railway and infrastructure contracts almost invariably carry arbitration clauses, and disputes over delay, escalation, extension of time, price variation and final bill certification are the everyday currency of the sector. Familiarity with the Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996 — the conduct of proceedings, Section 34 challenges and Section 36 enforcement — is the single most valuable skill for this post.
- Contract drafting and claims. Tender documents, general and special conditions of contract, sub-contracts, work orders, bank guarantees and performance security. The advertisement's reference to "drafting commercial agreements" means this.
- Court cases. Writ petitions, civil suits and execution proceedings, largely before the Calcutta High Court and the local civil courts.
- Statutory compliance opinions. For a construction PSU this spans labour and industrial legislation, contract labour regulation, safety, and the corporate governance obligations that attach to a government company under the Companies Act, 2013.
Eligibility
- LL.B. from a recognised university.
- Minimum 15 years' experience for the Senior Manager grade, or 12 years for the Manager grade, in a PSU or corporate legal department.
- That experience must cover court cases, arbitrations, drafting of commercial agreements and legal opinions on statutory compliance.
- Age not exceeding 62 years.
Note what the experience clause excludes. It asks for time served in a PSU or corporate legal department — in-house, on the client side. An advocate whose entire career has been in independent practice at the Bar does not obviously satisfy that wording, however senior. If you are in that position and still wish to apply, address the point directly in your covering letter rather than leaving the recruiter to infer it.
On the Remuneration
Rs. 1,00,000 a month for the senior grade and Rs. 80,000 for the junior is a reasonable figure for a fixed-tenure engagement, and it should be read as what it is. Re-employment arrangements of this kind are ordinarily a consolidated monthly payment — no provident fund, no gratuity, no annual increment, and a defined contract period rather than a permanent post. For a retired executive already drawing a pension, that is a sensible supplement. For someone treating it as a career appointment, the arithmetic looks very different.
The advertisement as reported does not state the contract period, whether it is renewable, or what allowances if any are payable. Those are matters to settle from the official notification and at the offer stage.
How to Apply
- Send the scanned application together with supporting documents by email to the address specified in the official notification.
- Applications must be submitted on or before 31 August 2026.
- Official notification: BBJ advertisement dated 5 August 2026 (PDF)
- Official website: bbjconst.com
Read the PDF before applying. It will confirm the intended pool of candidates, the contract period and the correct email address, none of which can be settled from a summary.
Who Should Apply
Retiring and retired PSU law officers. This is the target group, and the one least likely to be watching legal job boards. If you are retiring from a central PSU legal department, or have retired within the last few years, this is a rare advertisement written with you in mind — particularly if your service included arbitration and contract work.
In-house counsel from infrastructure and construction companies. The subject matter transfers directly. Someone who has run claims and arbitrations for a contractor will find BBJ's docket familiar from the first week.
Senior corporate counsel in Kolkata. The post is location-bound, and there is no indication of relocation support. Candidates already settled in Kolkata have a real practical advantage.
One further consideration that no job listing will mention. The Ministry of Heavy Industries has, in recent reporting, been processing a proposal to merge BBJ, Engineering Projects (India) Limited and Richardson & Cruddas with Bridge & Roof Company (India) Limited. As far as could be ascertained at the time of writing this remains a proposal under consideration rather than an approved decision, and its present status should be verified independently. For a fixed-tenure engagement the point may carry little weight; for anyone weighing a longer association with the organisation, it is worth knowing about rather than discovering later.
