OIL Green Energy Limited (OGEL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Oil India Limited, has advertised seven contractual positions, and one of them is a Legal Officer. The advertisement number is OGEL/AQ/CONT-EX-01 dated 13 August 2026, and applications close at 23:59 hours on 12 September 2026.
For a lawyer one or two years out of law school, this is worth a serious look, and the reason has nothing to do with the pay.
The Legal Officer post carries the lowest experience requirement of all seven positions in this advertisement.
Every other post — Finance Officer, both Contract and Procurement Officer posts, Executive Officer to CEO, Civil Engineer and Company Secretary — demands two or three years of post-qualification experience. The Legal Officer needs more than one year.
If you were called to the Bar in 2024 or earlier and have spent that time in corporate legal work, contract management or litigation support, you clear the experience bar for a subsidiary of a Maharatna oil company. That is not a common position to be in.

Two Things Most Candidates Will Get Wrong
First — the 60% requirement is not absolute. Read the qualification clause again. It says full-time LL.B. with minimum 60% marks or LL.M. The disjunction matters. A candidate whose LL.B. percentage fell short of 60 but who has since completed a master's degree in law is, on the plain language of the advertisement, eligible. A great many otherwise qualified lawyers will read "minimum 60%" and stop there. Do not.
Second — this is not an offline application. Several job portals have described this as an offline or postal recruitment. It is not. The advertisement requires the duly filled application form, in the prescribed format, with self-attested documents, to be sent by email to recruitment.ogel@oilindia.in before the deadline. And the warning attached to it is unusually blunt:
"Applications submitted in any other format other than the prescribed format will be summarily REJECTED."
The prescribed Personal Bio-Data Form is printed on the last two pages of the advertisement itself. Use that form. A CV, a covering letter and a self-designed application will not be looked at. Applications without supporting documents for date of birth, educational qualification and experience will also be rejected.
How the Seven Posts Compare
Seeing the whole advertisement in one place explains where the Legal Officer sits, and it is a more honest picture than looking at the salary alone:
| Post | Vacancies | Experience | Per month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finance Officer (CA / CMA / MBA Finance) | 01 | 3+ years | ₹80,000 |
| Legal Officer | 01 | 1+ year | ₹60,000 |
| Contract and Procurement Officer | 01 | 3+ years | ₹80,000 |
| Contract and Procurement Officer | 01 | 2+ years | ₹60,000 |
| Executive Officer to CEO | 01 | 3+ years | ₹80,000 |
| Civil Engineer | 01 (SC) | 3+ years | ₹80,000 |
| Company Secretary (ICSI Associate) | 01 | 3+ years | ₹80,000 |
The Legal Officer is in the lower pay band. It is also the only post you can reach with a single year behind you. Those two facts belong together, and a candidate deciding whether to apply should weigh them together rather than looking only at the ₹60,000.
What the Work Actually Involves
The advertisement sets out the Legal Officer's responsibilities in unusual detail, and they are worth reading closely because they tell you what kind of lawyer OGEL is looking for:
1. Drafting, reviewing and finalising EPC, O&M, land, consultancy, supply and tender-related agreements.
2. Developing and maintaining standardised contract templates aligned with company guidelines.
3. Providing legal inputs during tendering, bidding and project execution.
4. Advising management on company law, contract law, labour laws, electricity laws and environmental regulations.
5. Handling the legal aspects of land acquisition, lease, sub-lease and transfer, and approvals.
6. Managing litigation and arbitration, and coordinating with external counsel.
7. Identifying and mitigating legal risk, monitoring regulatory change, and supporting claims and recovery.
This is a transactional and advisory role built around infrastructure projects, not a litigation post. The litigation limb is limited to managing the panel and instructing external counsel. If you are hoping to argue, look elsewhere. If you want to learn how energy-sector contracting actually works — EPC risk allocation, land aggregation for plant sites, tender law, arbitration under project contracts — then a year or two here will teach you more than the same period in most junior practices.
The inclusion of electricity law in the advisory scope is a small but useful signal. OGEL is Oil India's green energy arm and its projects run to compressed biogas and renewable installations, which means the Electricity Act regime, tariff and open-access questions and the associated regulatory framework will be live issues. A candidate who can speak to that in the interview will stand out from one who cannot.
The Selection Process
There is no written test. Selection is by Screening cum Personal Interview carrying 100 marks, and the qualifying threshold is 50 marks for all categories. Final selection is on interview merit alone among those who reach 50.
Candidates are assessed on professional knowledge and skills in the concerned discipline, professional knowledge in allied disciplines, and personal attributes and soft skills. That "allied discipline" limb is worth preparing for: for a Legal Officer at a green energy company, it points at commercial and project awareness, not just black-letter law.
One practical warning — the entire outcome rests on a single interview. There is no written paper to carry you, and no second stage to recover in.
Read This Before You Apply — What "Contractual" Means Here
The advertisement is unusually candid about the terms, and I would rather set them out plainly than let anyone apply under a misapprehension that this is a PSU job in the ordinary sense.
| Term | What the advertisement says |
|---|---|
| Termination | Either party may terminate at any time on 30 days' notice |
| Regularisation | Confers no right or claim whatsoever to employment or regularisation in OGEL |
| Posting | Liable to be placed at any location as the Competent Authority deems fit; may involve shifts, arduous duties at remote installations and on-call availability |
| Accommodation | To be arranged at the candidate's own cost |
| Outside work | No other assignment permitted for the entire duration of the engagement |
| Interview costs | No TA, DA or any other allowance for attending; no reimbursement for joining |
| Statutory benefits | EPF and Gratuity are applicable |
| Joining | Immediate on provisional selection, with a maximum extension of 15 days; failure to join cancels the selection |
The bar on taking up any other assignment deserves particular attention from anyone currently in independent practice. If you are enrolled and appearing, this engagement will require you to stop. Think that through before you send the form, because a Bar Council enrolment that goes dormant for three or four years has consequences for a practice you may want to return to.
On the other side of the ledger, EPF and gratuity are applicable, which is more than a good many "consultant" engagements in the public sector offer, and the three-year initial term with a possible extension is long enough to be worth something on a CV.
Documents — One Trap Worth Flagging
Applications must carry supporting documents for date of birth, educational qualification and experience, or they will be rejected at the screening stage. On date of birth the advertisement is rigid:
"Admit Card or Pass Certificate or Marksheet of Class 10th issued by the concerned Government Recognised Education Board will only be considered as valid proof of date of birth. No other document will be accepted as valid proof of date of birth."
An Aadhaar card, PAN card or passport will not do. If your Class X documents are not to hand, start looking for them now rather than in the second week of September.
At the interview stage, shortlisted candidates must produce originals plus self-attested copies of the bio-data form, a recent 3cm × 3cm photograph, photo identity and address proof, Class X documents, all semester and final marksheets, the pass certificate, and experience certificates. Caste, non-creamy-layer and EWS certificates apply where relevant — though note that the Legal Officer post is Unreserved, so it is open competition. Selected candidates will additionally need a medical fitness certificate, police verification, and a release letter in original from any current employer.
How to apply, in short.
Download the advertisement from the Oil India / OGEL careers page, fill the Personal Bio-Data Form printed on its last two pages, attach self-attested copies of your date-of-birth, qualification and experience documents, and email the whole set to recruitment.ogel@oilindia.in before 23:59 on 12 September 2026. Use an email address and mobile number that will stay live through the whole process, because every communication including the interview call will go by email only, and requests to change them will not be entertained. Keep a copy of the sent email.
Who Should Apply
If you qualified in 2024 or earlier, hold a full-time LL.B. at 60% or above (or an LL.M.), and have spent your time in corporate legal work, contract management or litigation support, you meet the criteria comfortably and you are competing for a single unreserved post against a field that the low experience bar will make larger, not smaller. The interview is the whole game, so prepare for it properly — contract drafting, EPC and O&M structures, land and lease issues, and enough of the electricity and environmental regulatory framework to hold a conversation.
If you are settled in independent practice and value that, read the no-other-assignment clause and the any-location clause again before you decide. This is a three-year commitment to a project company, not a secondment.
This post is a summary prepared for the convenience of readers, based on my reading of OGEL Advertisement No. OGEL/AQ/CONT-EX-01 dated 13 August 2026.
