Indian Oil Corporation Limited has opened its 2026 executive recruitment, and Law Officer is one of the four posts on offer. Applications are online only, the window runs from 12 August to 31 August 2026, and the computer-based test is tentatively fixed for 24 September 2026. The advertisement number is IOCL/CO-HR/Rectt/2026/01.
Two features of this notification are worth putting up front, because between them they tell you almost everything about who this recruitment is for.
First: this is not an entry-level opening. IOCL requires a minimum of two years' post-LL.B. work experience. A candidate who graduated in 2025 or 2026 is out, whatever their marks. That single line filters out the overwhelming majority of applicants who chase PSU legal vacancies.
Second: the Law Officer sits in Grade A, on a scale of ₹50,000 to ₹1,60,000 — the same grade and the same scale as the Engineers and MBA officers recruited in the very same advertisement. In a great many public sector undertakings the law function is slotted a grade below the technical and commercial cadres. IOCL is not doing that here, and for a two-year-qualified lawyer that parity is the most valuable thing in the notification.

| Last date to apply | 31 August 2026 |
| Computer Based Test | 24 September 2026 (tentative) |
That is a nineteen-day window, and the corporation has expressly marked all three dates as tentative. Nineteen days sounds generous until you factor in what a PSU application actually requires — scanned certificates in prescribed dimensions, an experience certificate on employer letterhead, caste and disability certificates in the exact Government of India format where applicable, and a photograph and signature meeting file-size specifications. Candidates who leave it to the last week routinely find that the document they need most is the one their employer takes ten days to issue.
The Four Posts in This Advertisement
Law Officer is one of four posts notified together. Seeing them side by side is what makes the grading point visible:
| Post | Grade | Pay Scale |
|---|---|---|
| Engineers / Officers (Graduate Engineers, MBA) | A | ₹50,000 – ₹1,60,000 |
| Law Officers | A | ₹50,000 – ₹1,60,000 |
| Assistant Quality Control Officers (M.Sc. Chemistry) | A0 | ₹40,000 – ₹1,40,000 |
| Junior Engineers / Junior Officers (Diploma) | E0 | ₹30,000 – ₹1,20,000 |
What the ₹50,000 Basic Actually Means
The figure quoted is the basic pay in the IDA (Industrial Dearness Allowance) pattern, not the salary in hand. On top of the basic, a Grade A executive in a Maharatna oil marketing company draws industrial dearness allowance revised quarterly, house rent allowance or company accommodation, a cafeteria of perquisites and allowances calculated as a percentage of basic, contributions to provident fund, gratuity and pension, medical cover extending to dependants and continuing after retirement, and performance-related pay linked to corporate and individual performance.
The result is that the gross annual cost to company for a fresh Grade A entrant in a company of this class sits several multiples above the basic. I am deliberately not quoting a single figure, because the components are revised periodically and the detailed advertisement is the only place a candidate should take that number from. But a two-year-qualified lawyer comparing this against a junior associate's package at a domestic firm, or against a district court practice in its third year, is not comparing like with like.
The Question You Must Answer Before Applying
What counts as "two years of work experience after obtaining the LL.B. degree"?
This is the single most important thing to verify in the detailed advertisement, and it is the point on which the largest number of applications fail. The short notice says only "post-qualification experience". It does not say whether independent practice at the Bar counts, whether it must be experience in a legal role, whether it is reckoned as on the closing date or some earlier cut-off date, and what documentary proof will be accepted from a candidate who practises independently rather than in employment.
If you are in litigation practice, start assembling proof now rather than in the last week. The documents that ordinarily carry weight are the Bar Council enrolment certificate showing the date of enrolment, a certificate from the Bar Association of which you are a member, and where you have worked under a senior, a certificate on that senior's letterhead specifying the exact period. If you are in employment, the experience certificate must show your designation and the precise dates — an offer letter is not an experience certificate, and a great many applications are rejected for exactly that substitution.
What a PSU Law Officer Actually Does
A Law Officer in an integrated oil company of this scale is not doing what a litigating advocate does, and candidates entering from practice should go in with clear eyes about that. The work is predominantly advisory, contractual and compliance-driven: vetting tenders and contracts under the corporation's procurement manuals, advising on land acquisition and right-of-user issues for pipelines, handling arbitration arising from vendor and contractor disputes, dealing with regulatory correspondence under the petroleum and environmental statutes, managing the panel of external counsel who conduct the corporation's cases, and preparing the briefs and instructions on which those counsel act.
Court appearance, where it happens at all, is usually limited to consumer forums, labour authorities and statutory tribunals. The corporation's substantial litigation is briefed out. For a lawyer who enjoys arguing, that is a genuine trade-off, and it is worth being honest with yourself about it before you sit for a test in September. For a lawyer who wants institutional work, structured hours, and a career ladder that runs to General Manager and beyond within a Maharatna, it is a very good place to be.
Before You Apply — A Short Checklist
The short notice is exactly that. The detailed advertisement is the operative document, and it will carry the terms on which selections are actually made. Read it for the following, none of which appears in the short notice:
1. Number of vacancies and the category-wise break-up. Whether the post is reserved in whole or part changes the calculation entirely for candidates in every category.
2. Upper age limit and the relaxations. PSU executive recruitment at this grade commonly sets an upper age limit with the usual relaxations for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer), persons with benchmark disabilities and ex-servicemen. Check the reckoning date.
3. The minimum marks in the LL.B. Most PSU legal recruitments prescribe a percentage floor, with a lower floor for reserved categories. If your degree is classified in grades rather than percentages, check how the conversion is to be certified.
4. Whether a "regular full-time" course is required. This condition appears in a large number of PSU advertisements and excludes distance and correspondence LL.B. degrees. Given that the Bar Council does not recognise distance LL.B. for enrolment in any event, most candidates will be unaffected, but check it.
5. The CBT syllabus and pattern. Whether the paper is a general aptitude test plus a legal domain section, the marks allotted to each, and whether there is negative marking.
6. The application fee and the exemptions.
7. Whether an interview or group discussion follows the CBT, and the weightage each stage carries in the final merit.
How to apply. Go to iocl.com, open the Careers section, and locate advertisement IOCL/CO-HR/Rectt/2026/01. Register with a working email address and mobile number that will remain active through September, complete the form, upload the documents in the prescribed formats, submit, and save a printout together with the system-generated registration number. Apply only through the official website. IOCL does not charge any agent or intermediary for recruitment, and any demand for money in exchange for a job in a public sector undertaking is a fraud.
The Bottom Line
This is a narrow opening, and that is precisely what makes it worth taking seriously. The two-year experience bar removes the flood of fresh graduates that ordinarily makes PSU legal recruitment a lottery. If you qualified in 2024 or earlier, hold an LL.B. from a recognised institution, and can document your experience cleanly, you are in a materially smaller pool than the raw prestige of the employer would suggest.
The application closes on 31 August 2026 and the test is three weeks later. Read the detailed advertisement the day it appears, verify the experience clause against your own certificates before you pay anything, and do not leave the document upload to the final weekend.
