Applications close on 9 September 2026 at 5:00 p.m. The advertisement fixes a time, not just a date — an email that lands at 5:30 p.m. is late. Applications go to recruitment@apeda.gov.in, and the subject must state the position applied for.
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority has advertised a single contractual post of Associate (Legal) at its New Delhi head office. The job-alert sites have reported it as an LL.B. post with two years' experience and some knowledge of intellectual property law.
That description is accurate but it undersells the job considerably. Read the scope of work in the advertisement itself and this is not a general legal-officer role that happens to touch IP. It is, in substance, a geographical indications brief — and APEDA is one of the few bodies in India where that work is genuinely substantive.

What the work actually is
The advertisement sets out the scope of work in five short clauses, and they repay reading because they are unusually candid about what APEDA wants:
- Liaise with the law firms engaged to represent APEDA. So the role is instructing-side, not first-chair. You will be managing external counsel rather than arguing matters yourself.
- Be willing to learn and develop expertise in a niche area such as the law relating to protection of geographical indications. This is the operative clause, and it is phrased as a willingness to learn rather than a demand for existing expertise.
- Be proactive and handle work expeditiously; prioritise and manage time.
- Maintain strict confidentiality, given that the matters are highly sensitive.
Eligibility — and the age limit worth noticing
The essential requirements are modest: an LL.B., two years of experience in the relevant field, knowledge of basic IP concepts, clear written and spoken communication, and the ability to work to deadlines under pressure.
The upper age limit is 45 years. Read alongside a two-year experience floor, that is a very wide band, and it is worth spelling out what it means. This is not a fresher's post dressed up, and it is not restricted to people in their twenties either. A practitioner with fifteen years at the bar who wants to move into a government IP brief is as eligible as someone two years out of law school. Contractual government posts often carry a 30 or 35 year ceiling; this one does not.
An LL.M., or prior work in trademarks and geographical indications, is desirable but not essential — and given how few Indian lawyers have GI experience, the desirable column is likely to do a lot of the shortlisting work here.
The terms, read properly
Three things in the advertisement deserve more attention than a job alert can give them.
The money is the whole of the money. Rs. 90,000 to Rs. 1,20,000 per month is stated to be inclusive of all applicable taxes, with no other facility or allowance. There is no HRA, no medical, no provident fund riding on top. Compare it against a gross figure, not a basic. TA/DA is payable only when travelling on tour, at Pay Level 10 rates, and the post may require travel anywhere in India.
Three years is the ceiling, and it is absolute. The engagement is for one year, extendable year to year on performance evaluation, and then: after three years no further extension is permissible under any circumstances. The advertisement also records that the engagement confers no claim or right to any subsequent engagement with APEDA or any other government department. So this is a defined three-year window, not a route into permanent government service, and it should be planned that way.
Two termination clauses that do not sit comfortably together. Clause 7.1 gives either side the right to terminate on 30 days' notice or pay in lieu — a fair, symmetrical provision. But clause 8.5 says that if services are found unsatisfactory or in conflict with APEDA's interest, they will be terminated forthwith, without any notice period or compensation. The second clause substantially swallows the first. Anyone negotiating or simply deciding whether to accept should read them together rather than relying on the 30-day notice alone.
Also worth knowing before applying:
- Office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. including a half-hour lunch, with an express warning that late sittings and work on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays may be required.
- Leave is 20 days a year, pro rata, with prior written approval, and unavailed leave cannot be carried forward. Up to a month of leave without remuneration may be considered.
- Maternity leave is available under the Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Act, 2017.
- The appointee is governed by the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and all work product is APEDA's property.
- You may not publicise the APEDA association for commercial advantage, or use its name, emblem or seal, without prior written permission. Relevant if you were thinking of this as a branding exercise for a practice.
- Police verification and a medical fitness certificate are required before engagement.
- Clause 8.8 states that in the event of death, injury or illness while serving, neither the Associate nor the next of kin is entitled to any compensation or appointment.
How to apply — and the mistakes that will cost you
The process is simple, which is exactly why applications get rejected on form rather than merit.
- Use the prescribed format printed at the end of the advertisement. Clause 3.4 says applications should be submitted strictly in that format only. A plain covering letter and CV will not do.
- The application must be typed and signed. Type it, print it, sign it, scan it — not a typed page with a name at the bottom.
- Paste a recent passport-size photograph on the form.
- Attach the scanned CV and self-attested copies of proof of age, essential educational qualification and experience certificates.
- Email to recruitment@apeda.gov.in. It is mandatory to mention the position applied for — put “Associate (Legal)” in the subject line.
- Send one application only. Clause 3.2 warns that submitting more than one may lead to rejection.
- Arrive before 1700 hrs on 9 September 2026.
The application form asks for name, father's or husband's name, permanent and correspondence addresses, contact number and email, date of birth, nationality, educational and professional qualifications in a table, post-qualification work experience in a table with the nature of work and responsibilities, languages known with proficiency, and any other relevant information.
Who this suits
On the plain terms, this is a one-post, three-year-maximum contractual role with no allowances and no path to permanency. Judged only as a salary line, it is unremarkable.
Judged as a specialisation, it is unusual. Geographical indications is a small and growing field in India, the case work sits at the intersection of IP and international trade, and the number of positions where a lawyer can get sustained exposure to a live GI portfolio — instructing external counsel, on matters the advertisement itself calls highly sensitive — is very small. Two years of post-qualification experience is a genuinely low bar for that kind of work.
If you are drifting in general litigation and want a defensible niche, or you already have a trademarks background and want to convert it into something rarer, the trade-off is a reasonable one. If you are looking for security, allowances or a career track, it is not.
