Law Jobs by Akinchan Aggarwal, Advocate — B.A. (Hons.) Gold Medalist, LL.B. (University Rank 2), LL.M. (Dispute Resolution), UGC–NET, Ph.D. (Pursuing)
Titan Company Limited is hiring a Regional Legal Head at Kolkata. The requirement is an LL.B. with 8–10 years of in-house experience in a leading corporate, and the role carries team-handling responsibility for the region.
The first thing to understand: there is no last date.
Most vacancies covered on this website are government or PSU notifications with a fixed closing date, a rule book and a formal application window. This is not one of those. It is a corporate requisition on Titan's own applicant tracking system, and it stays open only until the position is filled or the requisition is withdrawn. Roles like this are commonly pulled within a few weeks. There is no benefit whatsoever in waiting, and no notice will be given before it disappears.

Read the Job Description Properly — This Is Not a Litigation Role
The advertisement lists eight responsibilities. Read them together and the shape of the job becomes obvious, and it is not what most litigating advocates assume when they see "Legal Head".
Three of the eight are about contracting: drafting franchise agreements, agency agreements, retail agreements, LoIs, MoUs, lease deeds, leave and license agreements, advertising agreements and service agreements; representing the company at contract negotiations; and reviewing documents for the business.
Two more are about property: due diligence of title documents, and assessment of stamp duty and registration fee with registration of company properties.
Only two touch disputes at all — replies to legal notices including consumer issues, drafting and reviewing pleadings, and attending to litigation filed by and against the company. And in an in-house role of this kind, that ordinarily means instructing and supervising external counsel, not appearing yourself.
What the role really is.
Titan sells through a very large network of company-operated and franchised stores. A Regional Legal Head for the East is, in practice, the lawyer who makes store rollout and store operations legally safe: negotiating and papering the lease or leave-and-license for each new outlet, running title diligence on the premises, getting the stamp duty right, papering the franchise relationship, clearing advertising and marketing collateral, and dealing with consumer complaints when they arise. If that work interests you, this is an excellent role. If you are hoping to run a litigation portfolio, read the list again before applying.
Where the Real Edge Lies
Two things in this advertisement will separate a shortlisted CV from a rejected one.
1. State-specific property and stamp practice. Stamp duty and registration are governed by State amendments and State schedules, and practice at the sub-registrar's office differs materially between States. A candidate who has actually handled West Bengal registration and stamping — and who understands adjudication, deficit stamp duty and the practical mechanics of registering commercial leases in the State — brings something a candidate from another State does not. Say so explicitly in the CV.
2. Consumer law under the 2019 Act. "Consumer issues" appears in the responsibilities, and for a consumer-facing retail business it is not incidental. Exposure to the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 — complaints before District and State Commissions, product liability under Chapter VI, and the rules on misleading advertisement — is directly relevant, particularly read with the advertising-agreement work in the same list.
Beyond those, the transferable strengths are: high-volume commercial contracting, retail or FMCG in-house experience, and demonstrable experience managing a team and a panel of external counsel.
The Full Responsibilities
- Drafting legal documents and business agreements — franchise, agency, retail, LoIs, MoUs, lease deeds, leave and license, advertising and service agreements.
- Due diligence of property title documents.
- Assessment of stamp duty and registration fee, and completing registration of company properties.
- Representing the company at contract negotiations on legal issues.
- Keeping the business informed of relevant developments — court rulings and legislative amendments affecting marketing and the retail industry.
- Timely replies to legal notices, including consumer issues; drafting and reviewing pleadings.
- Supporting the business on operational matters.
- Attending to all litigation filed by and against the company.
Who Should Apply
You are a strong fit if you have 8 to 10 years post-qualification in-house experience with a substantial corporate — retail, FMCG, real estate or manufacturing — you have run a commercial contracting desk at volume, you have handled property diligence and registration, and you have already supervised at least one or two juniors or a panel of external counsel.
You are probably not a fit if your practice has been purely in court, if your experience is entirely at a law firm without in-house exposure, or if you are materially short of the eight-year mark. Private-sector experience bands are applied more flexibly than government eligibility rules, but 8–10 years for a regional head position is a genuine expectation, not a formality.
Applying to a Corporate Portal Is Not Like Applying to a Government Post
Readers of this website apply to a lot of government notifications. The habits that work there do not work here.
- There is no standard form and no equalising rule book. Your CV is the application. It will be read for about twenty seconds in the first pass.
- Tailor the CV to this advertisement. Applicant tracking systems and recruiters both screen against the language of the requisition. If you have done franchise agreements, lease deeds, title diligence, stamp duty assessment or consumer matters, use those words. A CV that says "handled commercial matters" will not survive a keyword screen against a JD this specific.
- Lead with the region. Eastern India experience and the ability to work from Kolkata should be visible on the first page, not inferred from your address.
- Quantify. Number of agreements executed per year, size of the property portfolio handled, number of stores rolled out, size of team supervised. In-house recruiters read scale.
- Apply now. There is no closing date, which means the requisition closes when it closes. Applications received early are read when the shortlist is still open.
